Natural to use, easy to change settings for condition. | | Weaknesses: Heavy, but then, that's what I paid for. | | Overall: A true gem of a camera. Gives a feeling of certainty in both operation and results. |

 | | | Posted: 03/08/07 | | 'FANTASTIC CAMERA' | | Strengths: Great image quality, excellent handling, so many controls available on switches not in menus. | | Weaknesses: Metering mode switch can get knocked by accident, battery life not as good as other Nikon DSLRs I've used. Screen seems to have a slight yellow cast, white balance not perfect, but not a problem for my RAW workflow. It is pretty weighty, makig it hard wrk to carry up mountains, but the weight can be an advantage too. | | Overall: This really is the camera to beat from the handling point of view. The picture quality is great too. |

Intuatitive controls well located. Great metering. Combined with the Nikkor 18-200 lense it excels & almost always produces great shots. The customising ability to suit ones individual style is outstanding especially with the ability to quickly change between banks of settings to suite type of photography. Combined with the Nikkor 18-200 lens it excels & almost always produces great shots. The customising ability to suit ones individual style is outstanding especially with the ability to quickly change between banks of settings to suite type of photography. | | Weaknesses: Okay, the standard settings produce slightly soft results, but can be adjusted to ones own taste. A little heavy compared to some, but well balanced. In conclusion I believe the perfect camera does not exist but this is as close as it gets for me! | | Overall: This is my first digital SLR after my film camera, my Canon Eos 1, which I bought in 1989 and it never put a foot wrong. So why did I change to Nikon. That lense tipped the scales for me. Canon produce nothing like it. Ken Rockwells web site, full of great pictures with this camera and lense, converted me and I have never looked back. I always shoot Raw and convert with DXO Optics Pro. The results are fantastic.[Update 08/02/07] This is my first digital SLR after my film camera, my Canon Eos 1, which I bought in 1989 and it never put a foot wrong. So why did I change to Nikon. | | | Posted: 06/11/06 | | 'GREAT CAMERA, HUGE LIST OF FEATURES (HAVEN'T USED ALL YET)' | | Strengths: Very comfortable to hold and buttons located very conveniently. Robust. Very fast shutter response and continuous shooting. Autofocus accurate and fast (better with center focus point than outlying ones). Image quality very good, but soft at default settings. Colours are pretty accurate, less punchy than Canon but also more accurate (In my view). Built in flash can command Nikon off camera flashes. Number of settings is incredible including 4 shooting banks, interval shooting, auto iso, wide variety of bracketing parameters etc. | | Weaknesses: So many features it could be complicated to use for beginner. A trifle heavy, but that didn't bother me really, and gives an air of quality. Tendency to underexpose slightly (can be permanently adjusted in camera if you wish). Battery life shorter than my D70, but pretty good. Some feel the "noise" at high ISOs is not so good. I understand that Canon are better at high ISOs, but noise seems pretty good to me. Louder mirror slap than D70 (which was exceptionally good). | | Overall: Experience/ Test Log / Conditions Purchased early July 2006 Design and feature set is great. Have used it for general amateur photography. Occasionally it has been in slightly wet, pretty cold and very hot and humid conditions, and none of these have bothered it at all. How does it perform overall I have found it very responsive and quick to operate. It fits very comfortably in the hand. See Strengths and weaknesses above. Value for money I had exhaustively considered a replacement for my D70. My D70 and all lenses etc were stolen, so it was a chance to move to Canon 30D or stay with D200. I take a lot of low light pictures, so I was very tempted by Canon 30D. Maybe it was familiarity, but I much preferred the feel and layout of the D200. There were various pluses and minuses for each camera and it was a hard decision, but the feel of the D200 was the decider for me. It just felt more like a camera I would enjoy using. I didn't really give that much consideration to other brands other than Canon or Nikon, as reviews really didn't inspire confidence in other brands. In terms of value for money I believe the camera is worth its cost. You can get a very good camera for less money, but the D200 is that cut above the other competitors in this price range (again, others may disagree). Durability Early days perhaps as the camera is only quite new, but no problems at all so far. |
