'GOOD BUT SLOW'
Strengths:
Image quality
Easy controls - lots of buttons but very logical after a bit of practice.
Good to handle.
Great JPEG quality
Extra dynamic range helps with detail
Uses both XD and CF - you need never run out of memory at that crucial moment
Uses Nikon mount lenses
Uses readily available AA batteries, and using high capacity rechargeables, battery life is very good
Second shutter button for portrait mode
Weaknesses:
Slow to write images - JPEG tolerable - RAW only if you're patient!
Slow continuous shooting
Slow image review - really maddening - takes ages to move from one image to the next and if you touch the shutter button goes back to image number 1!
I experienced some iffy AF with both a Nikon 80-200f2.8 and and 24-85 AF-S - the short zoom often just not focussing [it behaved perfectly on a D50 and D70s]. A couple of nikon fit third party lenses behaved impeccably though - not sure what that proves!
Overall:
Great image quality for those who are'nt in a hurry. Recommended for landscapes/portraits etc. and a long time favourite for wedding photographers. Perhaps not the best for sport or other fast moving subjects.
Value rating is based on the price they were sold for when discontinued - and what they can be picked up for second hand.
