These cameras are designed to be thrown about and used underwater, yet still work just as well as it does on land, and some are suitable for use at greater depths, instead of just splash protection. Feature-wise they are just as good as other compacts, but it may be cheaper to get a waterproof case that's designed specifically for your camera model
