Sony commercialises world's first 12.25 megapixel CMOS image sensor for mobile phones.
Sony announces the commercialisation of "IMX060PQ" - a new type 1/2.5 CMOS image sensor for use in camera-enabled mobile phones. Shame the name wasn't made a bit more “commercial” too. Boasting the mobile phone industry's highest resolution at 12.25megapixels, the Sony Exmor sensor is built upon Sony's smallest unit cell size too; which, at just 1.4µm, is very tiny indeed.
In recent years, the convenience offered by cameras in mobile phones has driven an increase in their use, while demand for higher image quality has also continued to grow. In addition, as mobile phone designs have become more refined, and models become smaller and thinner, the need for further miniaturisation in mobile phone camera technology has also increased. Sony's "Column-Parallel A/D Conversion technique" helps to minimise image noise that inevitably arises with such a small sensor size.
