Olympus µ [mju:] 1050 SW

Olympus claims the new µ [mju:] 1050 SW is 'waterproof, shockproof and funproof'. The 10.1 megapixel camera is rated to be shockproof to 1.5m ( so says the press release - we think that should be 1.5G, or maybe even 15G, which would be impressive), waterproof to 3m and freeze-proof to -10 degrees Celsius. We don't have a sample yet, but when we get one, we'll take it to the Comedy Store and see how it handles some fun.

The new generation of ruggedised Olympus camera comes with all the must-have features of 2008, include face detection, noise reduction, shadow adjustment and 'image stabilisation' (although in this case it's a high ISO boost, not a sensor or lens-based system). It misses out on a 28mm wide zoom, the range covering instead an equivalent to 38-114mm instead.

A unique feature of the Olympus µ [mju:] 1050 SW is its TAP control, which allows the user to control functions by a button tap (instead of a press) - potentially useful for those wanting to check out the 2.7” LCD screen in extreme conditions.

The Olympus µ [mju:] 1050 SW is available in a range of colours including Dolphin Grey, Pacific Blue, Midnight Black and Misty Rose, and can run its menus in any one of 39 languages. Interestingly, the camera supports microSD cards as well as xD - could this spell the beginning of the end of the not-well-supported card format?

Available: September 2008
Price: Ł259.99

Perhaps 'shockproof to 1.5m' means you could drop this camera from a height of 1.5m on to something. Presumably, there's an industry-standard material designed specifically for dropping things on. Or, so I don't end a sentence with a preposition, there is a specifically designed industry-standard material, dropped upon which are things.

I want to work for a standards organisation like this. Just so long as they are called something like the European Commission for Breaking Things in Exciting Ways.
