Round One of 2008's Photographer of the Year competition is over. We asked for people pictures, and we got everything from classical portraiture to abstract photos of bits of bodies. We got photos of everyone from newborn babies to those at the other end of their lives. There was colour, treated colour, spot colour and no colour. And, in the main, the standard was very, very high indeed. If you entered the competition... well done!

The generally high standard made it difficult to pick out the 20 best images, and we started with a short-list that made up every image and slowly whittled down the 20 most impressive images. Regrettably, some excellent images had to be disqualified because the photographer submitted more than five photos, and others were extremely good, but ineligible because they were submitted by international photographers. Eventually though, we ended with what we thought were 20 of the best photos, and put them to the most difficult test of the lot... the public vote.

Two photographers' work quickly pulled ahead of the rest - Jimbob Sinfield's striking documentary photograph of a Coventry truant and John Singleton's moody, low key toned monochrome portrait of Sheldon Blackman. Up to the last minute, votes for both came flooding in, with a flurry of new members expressing an interest in our little competition.

When all the votes were counted though, it was Jimbob Sinfield's excellent image that nudged ahead and took the laurels... and Jimbob will soon be the proud owner of a Nikon D300, as supplied by top-notch London dealer, Kingsley Photographic. Congratulations... and congratulations to all 20 finalists.

Now... on to Round Two. This time it's your turn... what would YOU like the next category to be? Drop your ideas into the forum bow below...
