Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM lens

Sigma has more details on its new 50mm lens.

Sigma's latest prime focal length lens is a 50mm, which equates to a standard field of view on a full-frame sensor and a short telephoto (equivalent to about 80mm) on a camera with an APS-C sensor.

With molded aspherical lens elements, a maximum aperture of f/1.4 and a Hyper Sonic Motor, this would make a perfect 'fast' portrait lens for users of Nikon D40/D40x/D60 cameras (these models cannot focus with the standard Nikon 50mm AF-D f/1.4 lens).

It has suggested to have a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7”) and has a claimed maximum magnification of 1:7.4. The lens is expected to be compatible with Sigma AF, Canon AF, Nikon AF, Sony/Konica-Minolta AF and Pentax AF lens mounts.

The Suggested Retail Price of the 50mm f/1.4 HSM is £380.

Additional information from Sigma's press release:

"This is a large aperture prime lens with a standard focal length of 50mm, ideal for all digital SLR cameras. This lens has superior peripheral brightness even at the maximum aperture and corrects possible sagittal coma flare.

"This lens is perfectly suited for a wide range of subjects enabling outstanding, sharply defined images against a nicely blurred background. This lens effectively becomes an 80mm medium telephoto lens on digital cameras with APS-C size image sensors.

"The optimum optical design and molded glass aspherical lens elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting. Superior optical performance is also ensured throughout the focusing range.

"It has a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7”) and has maximum magnification of 1:7.4. It creates a very attractive blur, even when a small aperture is used.

"The lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF as well as full-time manual focus override."
