Olympus currently makes the smallest DSLR on the planet with the E-410. Now, that tiny-wee camera has been subtly enhanced. The new E-420 retains the small body, Live View and 10 megapixel live MOS sensor, but now sports a range of new features to bring it bang up to date.
The tick box of the moment - face detection - has been added to the specification sheet. In addition, there's a 230,000 pixel 2.7" 'HyperCrystal II' LCD preview screen (up from 2.5” and the original HyperCrystal screen) and it can now take 3.5 frames per second ( with a nine RAW file buffer) instead of the three frames per second and an eight RAW buffer in the E-410. Automatic ISO control has been extend across the whole ISO100-ISO1600 range, where it had a ISO400 cut-off in the previous model.
Most of the changes to the product are incremental and do not necessarily alter the image quality of the camera as it retains the same sensor and TruPic III processing engine. Perhaps the biggest change is a move to radio frequency flash connection, as seen on the Olympus E-3.
The Olympus E-420 will be available from April 2008, with an expected price around £380 for the body only.
