Just three of last season's Nikon Coolpix compact cameras make it long into 2008. The remaining seven have all been replaced or changed in the company's Spring/Summer line-up. Nikon has also increased the range of finishes, with 22 different colour schemes across the whole range.
Joining two of the survivors in the 'Performance' range - the P5100 and P50 - comes the new £200 P60. This is 8.1 megapixel, 5x zoom compact with a 2.5” LCD, sensor moving Vibration Reduction, a sensitivity of ISO80 - ISO2000 and full Program, Aperture, Shutter and Manual modes. Powered by AA batteries and available in black only, the P60 also sports face-detection, EXPEED processing and in-camera D-Lighting effects.
The biggest changes occur in the Style range, with model changes throughout. The top model in the series is the new £250 S600, a 10 megapixel, 4x zoom model, once again with face detection, D-Lighting, EXPEED processing and VR, this time built into the lens itself. This is claimed to be the most responsive compact in the range with a fast shutter and auto tracking focus. The camera features a 2.7” LCD, runs off a lithium ion battery and comes in natty black or silver finishes. This is joined by the slim S550, a 10 megapixel 5x zoom with both face and blink detection, electronic VR, 230,000-dot 2.5” LCD screen, sensitivity up to ISO 2000. The £200 S550 will be available in titan silver, urban black and blue.
The Coolpix S520 is claimed to be 'feature rich in a fine aluminum body'. It's a eight megapixel design with lens shifting VR and sensitivity up to ISO 2000, 3x zoom, a 2.5” LCD and even comes with food mode and can prioritise your favourite scene modes, too. Powered by a lithium-ion battery, the S520 comes in a choice of light bronze, urban black, purple finishes and will be sold exclusively through a high street retailer, that has not set the price as yet, although expect to pay around £140-£160. The style series is completed by the £130 S210. Even smaller than the popular S200 it replaces, the eight megapixel, 3x zoom S210 now features hardware based face recognition for faster focusing, a 230,000-dot 2.5” LCD screen, sensitivity up to ISO 2000 and electronic VR and a lithium ion battery. It comes finished in a choice of bright silver, urban black, blue, red, or sakura (light pink).
The lifestyle entry-level range is now just two strong, with only one product freely available. That is the £100 Coolpix L18, which sports a whopping 3” LCD monitor and electronic VR. The eight megapixel, 3x zoom compact comes finished in black and silver and runs off AA batteries. It's joined by the L16, which sports a seven megapixel sensor and a 2.8” LCD screen but is otherwise very similar to the L18, the L16 is an exclusively sold product, which has a price yet to be confirmed, but expect it to cost under £80.
Products will be available from the end of Feburary.
