Olympus SP-570 UZ

Olympus UP-570 UZ

Olympus would like it to be called Ultra Zoom, we'd prefer calling it something like SuperDuperUber Zoom. Whatever... the new £390 SP-570 UZ features a whopping great 20x optical zoom, equivalent to a 26-520mm on a 35mm camera. The addition of a 5x digital zoom extends this to a virtual 2600mm lens, or even a 4420mm lens with the addition of a teleconverter.

To support such a long zoom lens, the 10 megapixel SP-570 UZ features dual image stabilisation (both an ISO boost and CCD gyros) and has both a burst rate of 15 frames per second and a curious 'pre-capture' mode. This last allows the camera to store up to five frames in its buffer in the lag time between the shutter being pressed and the shutter actually firing.

The SP-570 UZ features all the regular options on a 2008 camera. These include face detection technology, a 2.7" LCD, movie and sound recording, and 22 scene modes, including a Super Macro Mode that permits focusing down to 1cm. It also sports some Olympus-specific concepts like the TruePic III image processor, the combined ISO/LCD boosting BrightCapture Technology and xD-Picture Card support.

There AA battery powered SP-570 UZ even supports wireless flash, something normally reserved for DSLR systems and has a full set of P/A/S/M exposure modes for creative freedom. The Olympus SP-570 UZ is expected to arrive in stores in March.
