Casio Exilim Z1000By Dave Pickstone | | |

Casio are pushing the boundaries of digital compacts yet again with the release of the first over 10 mega-pixel compact camera, the Exilim Z1000. In addition to setting a new benchmark for image resolution, the camera is the first in the Exilim series to offer a 2.8 inch ultra-bright LCD screen, and has a new Super Life battery allowing for approximately 360 shots.
Other big features touted about the camera include its amazingly quick speed: it turns on in just under 1.3 seconds, shutter lag is reported to be 0.002 seconds and it has high speed scrolling when playing back photos on camera. Its got an AF Assist light to help autofocus, which isn't commonly seen on compacts at the moment, and has a digital zoom system that lowers the resolution of the image as you zoom in to help keep the quality up. Similar systems to the latter can be found in new Panasonic and Sony cameras.
So that don't need a PC use the Z1000 fully, the camera has an AV out port so that you can connect to a TV, and PictBridge functionality to print straight to the printer. A variety of editing modes are included on the camera for both photos and video footage to help, and 34 different scene modes are available to take photos with, including a BEST SHOT high sensitivity ISO 3200 mode - which is surely a new first for digital compacts too.
The stainless steel Exilim Z1000 will be available mid-June 2006 in either silver or black.

| Posted: 28/04/06 15:37:38 38 | Over 10 megapixels now, pretty good going on Casio, i'd love to give this a try. They've got a sensor of that size in a still reasonable compact.
Surely now the sizes of sensors required now are limiting megapixel sizes of cameras. I can't see compacts having a lot over 10 and still being compact.
