Sony Alpha SLRs

Ever since Konica Minolta announced it was pulling out of the camera market and was selling its camera technology to Sony, speculation has been rife about what Sony would do with this new technology, especially since it hasn't got a digital SLR range of its own. Today Sony have finally put all the rumours to bed, with the announcement of their Alpha range.

The Alpha range, standing for “beginning” and “essential”, will be a range of SLR cameras that will integrate SLR technology, Sony's imaging sensors and electronics, and Konica Minolta's Maxxum/Dynax/Alpha lens mount system. Consequently this means photographers with Konica Minolta lens will be able to use all their lenses with the new Alpha SLRs and it will help Sony get a foot-hold into quite a hard market.

Unfortunately no cameras details themselves have been released, as this is just the PR campaign coming into play, but Sony has announced that the first Alpha cameras will be available in summer 2006, so there should be some more details coming shortly.

With regards to the other ranges of Sony image products, the compact range will still be marketed as Cyber-shot, and the video camcorder range will still be called Handycam.
