Tokina have recreated the AT-X 840 AF lens specifically for film and digital use. The original was released in 1996 and was at the time the smallest 400mm f/5.6 telephoto lens on the market. The 840 AFD is still the smallest telephoto lens that can zoom to 400mm, and it has a smooth and rapid focusing system thanks to the heavier glass parts of the lens system staying still while the rest rotate around them. With digital use in mind the barrel has a special internal coating that compensates for reflections and eliminates internal flare and ghosting.
The lens comes with a built in tripod collar that allows you to attach your camera to a tripod more safely, by balancing the camera and lens out better. It also comes with a new lens hood (more suited for the use of filters), a fitted soft case and a 3-year warranty.
The lens will be available worldwide in June 2006, and has an RRP of $1,100 USD - which is in the region of about £630 here.
