It was only yesterday (literally) that I was contemplating the whole megapixel argument due to the arrival of a 12.1MP digital compact… and it seems that it's hotting up yet again.
Panasonic's new DMC-FX100 is the 'Worlds first 12.2 megapixel 28mm wide angle premium compact digital camera'. Fair enough - though I think the 'premium' bit is a little unnecessary in making a description that much more of a mouthful.
Either way, that plants Panasonic's offering a whole 0.1megapixels beyond Casio's recent offering. But 12.2MP - is there real demand for such resolution in a compact?
That asides, there's a fair amount stuffed into this little Panasonic body - 3.6x optical zoom, 28mm wide angle lens, image stabilisation, 2.5" LCD, virtually instant shutter lag, 2 frames per second at full resolution, ISO to 1600, and HDTV playback… Now you can take a deep breath.
Missing from the stable, however, is the lack of the current must-have Face Detection - whilst not the end of the world, you would have thought that Panasonic would have started to slip such a feature into their recent releases to keep their competitors at bay.
All in all sounds like a good package, available in July. No price as of yet, which could make or break such an offering.
