EXILIM Zoom EX-Z1200

Casio EXILIM Zoom EX-Z1200 - the UK's first 12.1MP compact digital camera.

There's a been a lot of discussion of late about this whole megapixel business. Seems Casio are putting their oar in with this stacked out 12.1MP compact offering.

So, you want a digital compact - Face Detection and Anti Shake are the talk of the town, and you get both of these here.
You get a massive 2.8” LCD screen too - pretty good work, and a pleasure to look at for sure. Plus 3x optical zoom. But…

Do you really need 12.1 megapixels and the £280 price tag that comes along with that? - will you really need to utilise such a capacity of resolution?
Probably not, no.

What are the chances of wanting to print, say, A2 from a compact? And if you did, then the kinds of limitations from the technology available in such a format will begin to stick out like a sore thumb at such an increased enlargement.
It's by and large fairly good advice to leave the high end megapixel count to the higher end of the camera spectrum - where they're needed and have the lenses and developed technology to utilise such capacities fully.

By the way, that wasn't a rant, more of a fluid thought process - it's a perfectly good little compact with all of the sort of kit you will need in this range. But if you want to save some money, then you'll do perfectly fine with an existing model.

Review: Casio EX-Z1000
We loved the Casio EX-Z600 and the EX-Z1000 on paper looks every bit as good. But is 10 million pixels a benefit or just more than you really need? Here is the camera that came first in our £250 camera buyer's guide...

Review: Casio Exilim EX-S600
Not much bigger than a credit card, the S600 really is a pocket-sized camera, but does the 6MP camera suffer from trying to put too much gadgetry into too little space...?
Review: Casio Exilim EX-S500
A perfect go-anywhere compact camera that is capable of taking more than just point-and-shoot photos.
