Round 2: Close Up: Forum Competition Comments

One of the things I love most about this site is the gallery - and especially the feedback system. Take a browse through the gallery and it's a really simple matter to just click below any picture that takes your fancy and start a forum thread about it. You can share your experience, give helpful feedback or simply say “great shot”.

Well to celebrate all the fantastic shots in round 2 of our photographer of the year competition, our friends at Campkins have decided to make commenting on people's pictures a little more rewarding.

Here's the deal

The ThinkCamera team have picked out 10 shots from the competition hat we think are worth a second look. These aren't shots that won, they are pictures that are thought provoking, interesting or could use some friendly feedback. There's a thread for each of these 10 pictures in 'The Darkroom' Forum.

Each and every person who posts a meaningful comment will go into a prize draw. We have a whole bunch of vouchers from Campkins to give away - spend £30 and save £10. This would be great for that accessory you've been promising yourself for ages. Or a bag or tripod or to put towards a new camera.

More prizes please

Except one of our winners won't have to put it towards a camera - we have the brand new Olympus mju 770 SW to give away as our top prize. This amazing 7.1 MP camera is waterproof down to 10m, shock proof from heights up to 1.5m, crushproof up to 100kg and freezeproof down to -10C.

For discussion:

Here's some images that we'd like to talk about - they've been selected across a variety of subject matters.

Click the image that you wish to discuss and you will be whipped to the particular forum thread associated with that image - this is where the final comments will be drawn from, if it's not in that particular thread then you are not eligible for the draw.

Here are the rules:

  • Every member who makes a meaningful comment in one of the threads listed below between now and the end of May 2007 will go in a draw. Winners will receive a voucher for £10 off when they spend £30 or more at Campkins Camera Centre. Maximum of one voucher per member and you can only use one per purchase.

  • Every meaningful comment between now and the end of May will also get entered in a draw - the winner will receive a brand new Olympus 770 SW courtesy of Campkins. And yes you read that right - every comment. The more you comment the more chances you have to win.

    What's a meaningful comment?

This is the only tricky bit. We want comments that will help the photographer - either by encouraging them or showing them how the shot could be improved. Make sense?

Here are some examples of comments that I'd call meaningful

  • Love the way the colours blend one into another to give a beautiful gentle picture.
  • I think this would be a stronger picture if you had allowed more space for the subject on the left.
  • I love pictures of trains and think you've got this spot on. I like the steam and the light.
  • This brought back memories of a holiday I had in Wales.

And some that won't get you into the competition

  • Any comment of less than 5 words
  • “Great shot” - go on spend a couple of minutes telling us why you think it's a great shot.
  • “I hate this” - unless you give us reasons why you hate it.
  • Copying a comment from the list above (or from somebody else)

Of course the editor's decision is final on what is a meaningful comment. Play the game and you're pretty much bound to be in the draw, try to trick us into putting you in the draw and it's a lot less likely.

i used to enjoy photography a lot when i was younger, but through lack of funds (i have a young family!), have never really replaced the one decent camera i owned years ago.

can anyone recommend a low priced camera (digital) that i could invest in (i only own a compact digital camera (which has served me well  but i want a better one).

secondly, what do readers prefer-SLR or digital ?
