If you have hung around ThinkCamera for a while you may have noticed that Friday tends to be a little more chilled than other days. We've had features on how to make flash accessories out of cardboard and of course our classic "washing memory cards" was a Friday afternoon piece.

Anyway, spare a thought for Katharine Townrow. She's going to get very chilled this Friday. Very chilled indeed.
People often ask us "will my compact camera be OK on a chilly winter's day?". Katharine's about to investigate this for us. Armed only with a Fuji F30, a copy of Ulead Photoimpact on her laptop and a satellite phone to send pictures back to us, she's off to the Antarctic tomorrow. (OK, she is probably armed with a little more - presumably some kind of warm coat and thermals but we're only interested in the photo techie stuff).
Of course this is nothing like using a camera in the UK in winter - it's currently the middle of summer in the Antarctic. I just checked the weather forecast for the Bernardo O'Higgins Base - Friday's "high" is predicted to be -1C and they should get a "little" snow on Monday. Oh, and since it's the windiest place on earth you should probably factor a little windchill into that. |
All this talk about weather is pretty relevant - Katharine's trip is to highlight the problem of global warming. She's travelling with Robert Swan (first man to walk to both the north and south pole). They will be setting up the first Education Base (EBase) to teach about global warming. They will broadcast live from Antarctica to schools and corporate partners across the globe. Over 20 teachers have been working together to prepare a relevant curriculum that will be showcased on this website as part of the EBase project. You can see full details about the EBase on the expedition website.
Technology willing she'll also be sending back reports and pictures to us here at ThinkCamera. Good luck Katharine! And get us a great snap of a polar bear. No, wait - the ANTarctic? That might be a problem...
