Sony has got a pretty bad rep recently for its product recalls. Back in December 2005 six of its cameras were recalled in China because they failed safety checks and more recently the batteries it supplied to Dell had to be recalled over safety fears, followed by its Apple batteries and its own Sony branded ones - over 10 million in all. Now unfortunately the product issue is back in the open, with this announcement that another eight cameras are affected.
Thankfully it's not a battery problem so you won't find your camera bursting into flames in your hands. Instead it's a problem with the LCD screen. In hot or humid conditions (which could easily be the UK given the weather this year) the LCD may stop displaying properly due to a glitch in the CCD sensor, rendering the camera nearly useless.
The affected cameras are the F88, M1, T1, T11, T3, T33, U-40 and U50 and the recall applies to models released between September 2003 and January 2005. If you have a camera that is affected by this problem get in touch with Sony Support and they will repair your camera for free.
