In a bit of a change from the usual camera news, I'm not going to tell you about a new release but instead I'll tell you of one's demise - the Fujifilm S3 Pro dSLR has been discontinued. Fujifilm say this is a planned discontinuation and that the camera had come to the end of its production life in June 2006. The camera was Fujifilm's only offering in the digital SLR market and was quite well-received in the pro market selling quicker than they predicted it would. The camera will still be available in the UK while stocks last, and of course there is the second-hand market.
In almost the same breath Fujifilm have announced that they are still committed to the dSLR market and a replacement will be launched soon. More details about this haven't been released yet, although it would make sense to call it the S4 Pro. The same spokesperson has said its unclear whether the camera will be around in time for Photokina, but we will keep an eye out for anything while we are there.
Naturally with any gadget like this the internet rumour mills are in overdrive, suggesting that the “S4 Pro” will be another adaptation of a Nikon like the S3, this time the F6. Other suggestions are that the camera will be powered by AA batteries, again like the S3, instead of lithium-ion batteries like other dSLRs. The sensor will be Fujifilm's own, but details are pretty scarce about what the final specification could be as around five different sensors have been tested.
