Adding to this week's feeding frenzy of new cameras comes the Ricoh Caplio R5. In the run up to Photokina next month manufacturers are launching more and more compacts on the market (this is the 17th in the past 2 days). Ricohs are always particularly interesting because the company makes compacts that range from well equipped budget cameras (such as the RR330) all the way up to the GR which is used by many professionals as a pocket camera.
The R5 looks set to join the high end of their lineup. The zoom is an impressive 7.1X and runs from 28mm - 200mm (in 35mm equivalent). This should make it ideal as a travel camera since this will cover fairly wide angle landscapes through portrait and up to telephoto which could be used for a little wildlife photography.
Anyone who has been keeping up to date with new announcements will be unsurprised to learn that the Ricoh R5 features image stabilisation and promises excellent noise free pictures even at high ISO. The sensor delivers 7 million pixels which should be plenty for most purposes.
Expect to see it in the shops soon with an RRP of £279.99
