The new flagship in the P(erformance) series of compacts, Nikon's Coolpix P6000 is the company's first model with GPS tracking.
The new 13.5 megapixel camera sports a wide-angle 4x optical zoom (equivalent to 28-112mm on a 35mm camera and featuring two ED glass elements) and Nikon's EXPEED image processing system. Images can be viewed on the 2.7” TFT LCD screen and the camera features a DSLR-like grip, similar to the one found on previous top-of-the range Coolpix cameras. It also features a DSLR like selector dial, that can access the four main exposure modes (P/S/A/M) as well as 15 scene modes.
Nikon's Coolpix P6000 uses in-lens Vibration Reduction, which is claimed to give a three-stop advantage over non-VR systems and the camera offers sensitivity up to ISO 6400. The camera is one of the few compacts to shoot in RAW as well as JPEG and the P6000 features an Ethernet port and a hot-shoe for external flashes alongside the built-in pop-up model. Other features include built-in D-Lighting and red-eye correction, time-lapse movie mode and 12-person face recognition.
Perhaps the most interesting feature is the built in GPS device. This allows users to geotag their images, so that they can pin-point where they were when they took the picture. The geotagging service can be used with Nikon's 'my Picturetown' hosting facility.
The Nikon Coolpix P6000 will be available from 12th September 2008, with an expected RRP of £429.99.
