Wow. I never really thought we'd get this far. Two days to Christmas, two competitions left and they are both pretty special.
Ask anybody who starts getting serious about their digital photography what the number one problem is and they will tell you: the colour they see on their screen never matches anything. It's not the same as it is on the back of the camera, not the same as another monitor, not the same as their lab and certainly not the same as the real world.
To put things right you need to calibrate your monitor. When it arrives it's set up for word processing and office use and needs adjustment to show photos properly. Now you can do this by eye (and there is software on the web or in your editor to do this) but that's a bit hit and miss. It relies on you accurately judging the colour of various patches on the screen.
That's the kind of thing that machines are good at - and that's exactly what a hardware calibrator does. It looks at your screen and adjusts it until the colours are correct. There are just two problems with this.
- It needs redoing periodically
- The light falling on your screen makes a difference - you might need different calibration profiles in the morning and afternoon and certainly need a new one if you turn on electric lights
That's why you need a Huey from Pantone. Not only is it a hardware calibrator for super accurate colour, not only does it remind you when you need to recalibrate your monitor, it adjusts the profile as the light changes. Once you've calibrated your monitor it sits on your desk and adjusts the colours throughout the day as the light changes! Amazing - and that's why it won the Tipa Award this year for Best Imaging Peripheral and our Editor's Choice award in our review. You can buy a Huey and loads of other colour profiling gear over at Colour Confidence.
If you've been with us for the last 22 days then you'll know why I'm telling you this - click here for your chance to win one of the amazing Pantone Hueys.
Important note: all our competitions run until midnight. Tomorrow's is different - it closes at 4pm so we can all go home for Christmas - make sure you enter before then!
