Samsung announce a brand new DSLR

Well, it's nearly a week since the last brand new DSLR announcement so it must be time for another one! This week it's Samsung's turn with the GX-10. Reading the spec sheet, this is an unashamed move into the lucrative prosumer DSLR market by Samsung. The theory is that the GX-1S and GX-1L were aimed at the serious amateur while the GX-10 is for the professional market.

Samsung GX-10
I won't bother going through the entire spec sheet (for reasons that I'll explain below) but some of the highlights are a 10 million pixel sensor, shake reduction with image-sensor shift, raw file support and the camera itself is said to be “impenetrably built” - can't wait to test that bit! For anyone who has checked the specs of other recent announcements it will come as no surprise at all that the GX-10 also features an anti dust system. This works by vibrating the sensor when the camera is turned on the shake the dust free. There is also a special coating on the “CCD window”. In fact, this leaves the Nikon D80 as the ONLY recent release without a special anti dust system.

A casual reader of the news might think that the GX-10 looks pretty similar to the Sony Alpha 100. Similar pixel count, shake reduction by moving the sensor, anti dust system etc.. You'd be right - but only half there. The GX-10 is VERY similar to the Pentax K10D announced last week. In fact we're pretty sure it's the same camera. It's no secret that Pentax and Samsung have worked together on DSLRs in the past and the spec sheets of these two cameras are so similar that I'd be very surprised if they differed by much more than the badges.

Samsung have also announced 5 new lenses to support the camera by the end of the year. These are a 10 - 17mm fisheye, a 12 - 24mm ultra wide zoom, a 16 - 45 mm wide zoom, a fast 35mm F2 and a 100mm macro lens. This just leaves telephoto zoom missing but the lenses are compatible with the GX-1S and GX-1L so it's likely that telephotos from those cameras will fit the GX-10.
