Price Comparison:
Canon Digital IXUS 750

This camera is stylish and well-built. It is in fact built to last longer than may of the cheaper cameras on the market with a similar specification (but not a similar price tag). Prices for 7 million pixel cameras start at about £240, this weighs in at the top of the market: £349 or thereabouts.

Built to last
The Ixus 750 is a design that has evolved. It has moved from the quite boxy (even looking at the recent ones like the Ixus 350) design into something with more curves. Aesthetically this is an improvement. Like models that have come before, it has a wealth of features - “My Color” and other image tweaks for example. This can mean that on first appearance the camera seems difficult and technical. While it is a great camera that takes great photos, you are going to need the manual close at hand (not only the small manual, but the big one on the CD-ROM), because not all the features are self-explanatory.

Crammed with features
However, this camera hits the spot on several points. It's great camera for someone who wants to take good photos with a small camera. It is more likely to appeal to someone who is technically minded and willing to experiment with the wealth of features.

These features include a 2.5 inch screen, high quality movie mode and Color Swap feature. Color swap allows the user to select a portion of the photo and change the colour to that from a different area of the photo - colour co-ordinated photos, if you like. Other reviews have highly rated the software that comes with the camera too- a let-down from some other manufacturers.

Overall the design is compact and most of the essential features are easy to use and access. There is a good ratio of buttons to features accessed through the set-up menu and features menu. This makes the camera quite user friendly to start with; but if you want all the functionality, you'll have to work at it. Anyway, if tools like Color Swap are too much, they can be done with far greater aplomb in a simple software package like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop Elements. The direct-to-print service on-board is a well-hidden and useful feature, with the added advantage of tying in with some very good Canon printers.

Not for novices!
The number and variety of features will, of course, put some people off, and the tiny buttons are rather taking the biscuit. Compare the simple picture driven menu of the Nikon Coolpix 7900 at £249, which also takes very good pictures and has 7 million pixels and you will see what I mean.

The only real advantage of this camera lies in the advanced features like shutter speed priority. If we look at the basics features of the camera though, the Canon is not always the best. For example, although start-up speeds are very good, the battery life is about half that of some competitors. In this case, your purchase decision needs to be made on the basis of how many advanced features you want.

Our Verdict

Functions
Value for Money
Overall
At the end of the day the styling and design of this camera is aimed at a particular type of consumer. It is a feature rich model, and the features really work, each changing the color and nature of the photos (so many “advanced” features on other cameras are abysmal in action!). However, there are other cameras in the 750's class which are cheaper and also take perfectly good pictures.
