POTY Competition Round 1: The Winners!
By Mike Lowe

So now then! You may very well remember the opening round to our Photographer of the Year competition - after many quality entries the votes are in and have been whittled down to the top 3 in our magical ThinkCamera.com number cruncher.

Drum roll please...

First Place

The Eye by Tim Ruffles

Our winner is Mr Ruffles' photograph of the London Eye: Symmetry and a vivid colour palette of sublime blues and purples contrast the deep yellows of the leaves. A landmark such as this is photographed thousands of times a day, and yet in this photograph we are taken to another level. £200 of Park Cameras vouchers working their way to you shortly - congratulations!

Second Place

Last Light by Michael Sayles

Runner up we have the beautiful 'Last Light' - see the full size image and you can see the care in Michael's photography, every blade of grass captured by the setting sun is perfectly rendered. Certainly worth chekcing out the rest of Michael's portfolio starstonephoto.com

Third Place

Absolut Vodka by Simon Geary

At one point Simon Geary's Absolut Vodka photograph look as though it was way out front! - Shows how a simple light drawing method can produce some stunning visuals. This liquid light takes on a life of its own, good work.

And if you think that was good - go take a look at Round 2!

Out of interest, how does the ThinkCamera number cruncher work???

Is it just based on total number of votes?

I looked at the actual scores of these photos, and the winning photo has 68% - which is, by my reckoning, only the third highest of all photos in the gallery! The highest rated appears to be the 2nd placed photo, with 75%.

Just seems odd, that a photo that gets 50 '1' votes could win, if it's just number of votes that matters.

I didn't enter this round, but I eagerly await the next round, and will enter (if I can produce anything up to standard, LOL!) - I'd just like to know how winners are decided!

That aside well done to Tim, and to the 2nd and 3rd placed guys!!!
