How-to: Resize your pictures with Irfanview

Here's our picture open in Irfanview. Irfanview is a free jpeg viewer with a huge number of features. I always recommend all PC users to download a copy.

Resizing is very very easy and lots of people prefer to do it this way even if they have a full photo editor. From the file menu select “save as…”. You will get this dialogue.

All you need to do is check the “select new size” radio button and enter your new width or height. Since we have “preserve aspect ratio” checked Irfanview will calculate the other for us. Even better there are some standard dimensions on the left. I just selected 800 X 600 pixels.

At the bottom you can select various resample options or resize. Resizing to web quality you are unlikely to notice much difference between any of these. I usually leave it set to Lanczos because that generally gives best quality and takes very little time.

Hit OK and choose a name for your picture - job done.

But wait - there's more. Suppose you have lots of pictures to resize. Just hit “B” to bring up the batch menu.

Select your files on the right and drag them to the list on the left for processing. You can fill out the output directory and format. In order to resize images we're going to have to hit the “set advanced options” button. At first sight it looks a little intimidating.

However, just check “resize”, set the radio button for “set long side” and enter your long side measurement in pixels. Hit OK to go back to the batch menu, make sure “use advanced options” is checked and hit start. All your pictures will be resized and output to the chosen directory. It may look scary but this is one of the fastest and easiest ways to resize a batch of images on a PC.

I've used Irfanview and now another one called xnview.
I think that this is significantly better than irfanview as the interface is much more friendly. It offers much the same tools including simple editing and plug-ins.
