2GB Olympus xD-cards

olympus m-type xd

xD cards may be the Betamax of the camera world, but Olympus has announced it is upping the maximum capacity of the range to 2GB, in their M-type variety.

xD cards are one of the smallest forms of memory card on the market, measuring just 25 x 20 x 17mm in size - so it is reasonably impressive that Olympus have shoe-horned this much memory into the card. The only problem is that few people will benefit, as the card is only used by Fujifilm and Olympus in cameras, and even then they only feature in compacts, not the pro cameras.

This aside, the push up to 2GB is a significant and needed increase, with Olympus quoting that this will allow 1000 shots at 8MP (although there are other factors which determine file size). Being an M-type Picture card, it includes some exclusive features too - Olympus Panorama and art-effects like “oil painting”. But the best feature of all is the free 3D glasses included with the cards!

The 2GB cards are out now, but check the compatibility charts for Fujifilm cameras to see if yours can take M-Type xDs.
