The idea behind this photo is great, and the lemon-yellow against blue works really well. The lighting is also good - the reflected light makes the flesh of the lemon look really succulent and juicy.

But the shot lacks 'punch' - it's hard to explain why, but it needs more impact. I think the shallow depth of field may be to blame - with such a shallow DoF the subject matter seems to fade away into the background. Perhaps a larger DoF, or a more vertical shooting angle would have defined the edges of the slice better, and given this shot more 'zest', if you'll pardon the pun!

I like this image but find that the blue is distracting. In my opinion a more neutral coloured background would help to bring out the yellow. I find that the blue is fighting for dominance. I have done a quick edit to show what I mean.

Perhaps getting closer to the lemon would help, but I think the main prioblem is that the image appears under-exposed. To avoid blowing the highlights, perhaps try tweaking the curves? I'd darken the blue if possible, though.

I like Dave's interpretation but I feel a shot like this has to be crystal clear - requiring shart focus throughout. I like using a complimentary colour to add impact and I feel that Colin's version takes away any visual impact.

I didn't like the shade of blue either, it detracted from the picture and looked like it had been added afterwards.
What I do like about the picture is that it looks like the sun's shining on it and makes me smile:-)

I loved the simpleness of the shot and the use of only two strong colours. However I thought the centre of the lemon was a little 'grey' and perhaps would have benefited from being sliced thinner with a light shining through it to give it a more 'juicy' appeal? I always remove my pips before use too......? (That may say more about my drinking habits than my photography!)

This is actually two slices of lemon on top of each other, and they were photographed within about 3 minutes of being sliced from a new, fresh lemon, so I'm not sure why they look like they are dry! But I think they look quite moist to be honest!

The slices were just placed on blue paper, and the pips were left in because I thought it made the shot look more like a 'natural' shot of lemon. I could have done some work on the colour temp/balance to reduce the 'greyness'.

Great colours and not a bad comp, but I feel it's too soft. The lemon needs to be sharp all over and the contrast needs a boost.:)

Yellow on blue is a yes, good composition. But and its a big but the image is so ordinary it lacks interest. Pop a cherry in the middle or swat a fly and put it somewhere. Like me its too simple.
