This is a quality photograph that, IMO, deserves greater recognition.

It's the inside of a spin dryer - let's face it, that's not the most glamorous of subjects. Spin dryers make me think of Dot Cotton - they don't make me think of sleek, sexy, photography.

But this shot just OOOZES style. The photo looks like it should be part of the marketing campaign for a new top-of-the-range BMW. It's sleek, it's metallic, it's composed and exposed gorgeously - yet it's just the inside of a spin dryer!!!

Fantastic photography.

Looks very slick compared to my scratched old washing machine from the previous 'Light and dark' comp.

Veryu nice lighting - how was it done? An interesting interpretation of the "close up" theme - not really particularly close, but certainly a closer look at a washing machine than most people normally take!

I got the impression that was the reason the competition was called close up and not macro. Because the idea was just to have a different perspective and closer angle. This was actually one of the photos I like the best because it was so different.
This was one of my favourites too - that's part of the reason that I selected it.

The subject matter is almost entirely removed from what it actually is, so that's close up enough for me!

If there wasn't a title, it might be a little less obvious in a way.

Plus I'm quite the fan of symmetry.

Many Thanks for your all your kind words!
The shot is basically simple.(after the 3rd attempt!)
The Camera WB set to Tungsten for the internal light
of the Dryer (Fill) and the Camera Flash as Key,giving the
dominant Blue(under exposed/Tripod).All the surfaces
are slightly curved so no kick back from the Flash.
Photoshop-layer,blur and blended to soften all the scratches on the Metal.

Neat! I'd have guessed a blue filter on the flash from the image.

Louise, by "interesting" I didn't mean that I didn't think it met the brief - quite the opposite, I meant it was a creative way of doing it.

Ahh, sorry Dave, one of those 'depends which tone of voice you read it in' type of words LOL
Show/hide user stats
yeah, guess it was a bit ambiguous - sorry!

I agree that it's a beautifully executed shot and would be ideal for a marketing shot for Hotpoint etc but I think that it didn't receive the votes it deserved because it isn't a 'glamorous' image that people would like to adorn their walls. The slinky shot however, although also not a glamorous product, led to a very photogenic image. In fact really I feel that Stjohn Pope's image is even better in it's execution than the slinky but just doesn't have the 'I'd love to have that on my living room wall' appeal.

An unusual view of an everyday object, the colour really makes it seem more an item to be admired than one of boring housework.

I voted for this shot as, like my Slinky it was different. Not many people, and probably even fewer chaps, bother to look inside a washing machine. I think the lighting and colour really hit the mark. If only you could re-enter it for this months comp!

Congrats on your win Graham - I did vote yours highly. You have hit the nail on the head with your comment about chaps not seeing inside the washing machine - not in this house anyway!

What's a washing machine?
Show/hide user stats
Well, for all this talk of men not knowing what a washing machine is - at least I know the difference between a washing machine and a spin dryer!! :P Question is, which one is the picture actually of?
Show/hide user stats
Well Dave you should know if you know the difference - haven't you ever studied the difference between the insides?! We did lose the plot a bit cus it is just like my spin dryer that I'm sick of seeing the inside of - maybe that's why it didn't get the number of votes - women wouldn't vote for it cus it makes them shudder at the thought of housework (sorry to swear on here) whereas for men it's novelty! This is getting very sexist isn't it?!

To me this looks a very classy shot and puts a very different spin on a very dull subject!!!
