I have a Nikon Coolpix P1

I am finding it difficult to get clear close ups, eg taking a photo of a backstamp on a piece of china. I turn off the flash and use the macro mode but it is not very clear. Has anyone any ideas please

Don't expect miracles. A proper macro lens for a DSLR  would cost more than your camera.

In the manual, does it state just how close you can get with the camera? Measure your distance with a tape measure or ruler. If it's not that close, take a wider picture and so long as you have plenty of pixels,(7 or 8 mega pixels say) crop the picture with Windows Picture Editor or Photoshop to focus on the stamp mark.

Have you mounted the camera on a tripod for steadiness? In other words, could the blur be camera shake? Even on a tripod, use the shutter release timer to take a picture, 2 seconds delay say, so that when the picture is being taken you're not putting any pressure anywhere on the camera to cause shake or movement. If it's hand held, rest your hands against something solid, breath in and hold until the picture is taken.

This camera will focus down to 4cm, so that will not be a problem, I would suspect that your problem is Lack of illumination or, as Woody suggests, camera shake.

Why did you yurn of the flash?, for macro/close up  work you need plenty of light and a small aperture, so try a shot using flash and a small f stop and see if that's an improvement. Also upload an image and give us the exif info.

Photographing china is notoriously difficult, especially if it has a glaze. You have something white to the point of burning out the highlights and yet the markings can be dark enough to lose shadow detail. Worse, the reflective nature of the china itself makes it difficult to keep flare at bay. Here's a solution. Make a light tent. A white pillowcase is ideal. Place the china inside the pillowcase, put the camera at the mouth of the pillowcase and place a light (an anglepoise is ideal) close to one of the sides of the pillowcase; not so close it scorches it, but close enough to deliver good light levels. Now take a custom white balance reading using a piece of white card (or similar). You will need a method to immobilise your camera (a mini tripod is ideal) because you might have a long exposure.  Put everything on the camera in manual mode... even the focus. And if you do this regularly, consider buying something like a Lastolite ePhotomaker kit.
