I am seeking advice on what colour to paint my new studio walls and ceiling. I have just converted my old workshop and now have a home studio 5m wide, 12m long and a ceiling height of 3m. I have four studio flash heads with softboxes, brollies, honeycombs and reflectors. The main use will be for portraits/full length shots. I also have a number of drop-down backdrops. The present colour is white but for more control over the light reflections etc off the walls and ceiling, would a dark grey or black colour be more useful? Any advice will be very welcome. Thanks in anticipation.
Well, it depends... There are three schools of thought, and you've identified all of them.
White walls can act as useful reflectors, but they cannot be removed when you don't want them.
As to black or grey, it's what you can live with. Some go quietly mad in a grey room, where black rooms just look smaller. But as long as the black or grey paint is matt finish, you should be fine with either.
Thanks for that. I have now obtained some black fabric which I could hang on the walls when required to cut down reflections so maybe a mid/light grey for ceiling will work well and I could leave the walls white and cover them when needed.
