Interesting you should mention the pigeon - I thought much the same thing. If I had shot this with a compact/bridge camera - the only other cameras which really seem to encourage you to shoot from the ground - the pigeon would have most likely come out pin-sharp. I must confess I was going for that pin-sharp picture - I even shot at 800ISO to get as slow an aperture as possible - but it really wasn't going to happen on a dSLR sensor. Still, I quite like the blurry version too - comparing little things with great, it reminded me of Holbein's famous painting:
