I'm thinking of buying a Nikon D90 (my first DSLR) but not sure about which lens to get.

I've read that most kit lenses are a bit dodgy, although from what I have read, the Nikon 18-105 lens is better than most. Apparently it is better quality than the Nikon 18-55 and 55-200 twin lens kit that you can get for the same price as the 18-105.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what to get? I don't mind going to another brand like Tamron or Sigma but I'm not sure how their quality compares with the Nikon lenses.

It really depends on what type of lens you're looking for and how much you're willing to pay.  The new 18-105mm is getting positive reviews, and it's got a reasonable range with VR, and it's a Nikon, so it can't be bad.  I've got the Nikon 18-200mm VR on my D40 and really love the versatility and longe range, but it's expensive (£400+) and the f/5.6 aperture at 200mm is maybe a bit slow.  Sigma do a 70-200mm at f/2.8 across its range.  That must be a nice lens, and is not mega money (£500 ish).  And Thinkcamera have recently briefly reviewed a new Tamron that's 18-200 (or was it 250).  So, if that's the sort of range you're looking for then there are a few options.  If I was you I would seriously consider buying the D90 with its kit lens.  The kit is only £150 more than the body only price, so if you then decide you want another lens, you can decide to either keep or sell the kit lens.  Hope this helps.

Over my short time of using DLSRs around 2-3 years I have used loads of lenses. Which lens you prefer will depend on the style of photography you want to acheive. When I first started out I wanted big telephoto lenses. Cool for getting close to the action, but really rather limiting. Then at some point I realised I wanted a quality 'normal' lens. The Nikon 35mm f2 rarely comes off my camera now. I need a lens with a wide maximum aperture and around this length.

I only came to realise this after a long time, and its really good fun finding out what sort of photographer you are!
