I am actually thinking of buying a lightsphere (that gary wong thing, no not the one with the tail) and i was wondering if anyone has got/had one and was it any good?

A recent mag review put it on top of the flash accesories for the price, the ray ring flash being the best but lost out due to price and i have also found a version of it at

http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?pName=microglobe-mqa2-lightsphere-ii-plus-inverted-domecloud-flash-diffusion

for only £9.99

 let me know

 Andy

I followed the link, but I can't quite see what it is/how it works.  Does it fix to the top of a flash, or is it a bigger box type of thing that you'd put things in, i.e. like a light box.  It like a light box after seeing some great macro photos on flickr that've used a light box.

It slips on top of the flash if you goto www.garyfong.com this will show you more on how it works I was just interested if anyone had used one

I looked at one of these with interest to fit to my Canon 430EX flashgun. I take quite a few indoor shots as part of my job, particularly with people close to walls etc and hate the dark shadow that direct flash produces and the localised hot-spots. I tried a diffuser over the front of the gun and whilst it softened the shadows a little it was still visible. Bouncing the flash off walls is not really an option due to wall colour and the high ceilings are no better. I have just bought a Lightsphere but off eBay for £8.99 including postage from China. Initial results look good and I am pleased with it. I don't expect it will be as well made as the Gary one but it seems to work just fine.

These things have advantages and disadvantages, like they give a nice soft light but they suck power from your flash. You also look like a bit of a prat with some of the larger ones.

They work by pumping a bounce flash into the ceiling, while creating a diffused weaker lightsource above your camera. So they have the double bonus of creating a large overhead light and a second light below that but above your camera. With someone facing directly toward the light, this gives something almost like Paramount lighting (which is particularly flattering for women with good cheekbones and good skin - or brides with once-in-a-lifetime makeup to simulate the same). In some respects, almost everything that can be done with this kind of dome can be done with an Omnibounce (which is smaller but more expensive) or a piece of white paper held to the rear of the flashgun.

For a tenner though, this has to be worth a punt.
