For me it was an old German box camera which was given to me by dad in the early 60s, I later progressed onto a Box Brownie, the late 60s however saw my first 35mm in the form of an Halina Paulette Electric which badly let me down when the winding mechanism refused to work, by the early 70s it was a Zenith E later progressing onto Richos and Pentax before seeing the light and getting my first Nikon

You should ask Harry Jones, his first camera took daguerotypes, so I heard.

He asked for that for his comment on my article.

My first was a Kodak Twin Twenty in 1959 (I think), took 620 roll film and I added some filters for better B/W shots. Then I found other things to waste money on and it wasn't until my son was born I decided to play with a Zenit B in 1972 and bought a hand held meter to help.

That didn't last long because as soon as I got the bug, I swapped it for a pukka Minolta 303 in 1973, brand spanking new out then. Collected a few others along the way like a very nice Ricoh ME that still works perfectly today and a very flashy Minolta Disc camera (how bad were they?) with a case designed by Courrèges of Paris that we got for my mum (suited her). That still works, same battery, but you wouldn't be seen dead with it.

yes i thinbk we all did the Zenith thing, good cameras as long as you didnt drop one on your foot, I too used a Richo ME, similar to the Pentax ME super if I remember rightly?

Yep, count me in as a Zenit first timer too. I had a Zenit B, with the meter on top of the prism and a fully manual stop down. It was kind of like boot camp for budding smudgers in the 1960s and 1970s. Which is a kind way of saying if you used it, you got trained... and you got blisters.

My first was a Kodak Brownie 127. And then a Halina, followed by a Petriflex.

Then followed a Nikon F Photomic together with Pentax Spotmatics - 2, a Yashicamat, a Rolleiflex, 2 x Olympus OM 1s, Nikon F 50, Nikon F601, Fuji 601, Canon G6, Nikon D80 and Nikon D300.

My first was a Kodak 110, then a Chinon (something), then came my beloved Canon AE-1, Canon EOS, and now my Canon 400D.

Minox 35ML which I purchased in 1986 prior to going on a Worldwide Backpacking Expedition which lasted two years. It was discreet, had a wonderful little lens which meant 'sharp' images and with the addition of a Minox Mini-Tripod lasted me the whole trip with 'no worries'. I then sold it to my older Brother and it was broken within the year. I longed for it so much that I bought a 'Mint' condition Kit off a friend of mine 6 years ago and still use it, getting the Mini-Tripod and matching Leather case took longer to acquire as they are rare now, however I got one from the States this April - Now I am happy!

Zeiss-icon Contina with a Nova Anastigmat lens

My first 35mm was possibly a Canon T70 that I acquired... First medium was a Bronica SQ 6x45cm and first large format was a Horseman field 45FA.

I still don't think I actually own a digital camera... I just seem to have lots pass through!

Can I have your job when you leave?

My first camera was an Agfa Sillette in 1946, I think it took 620 film, while I was stationed in Plymouth, then on to a Voigtlander Vito 2, 35mm, then another Voigtlander a Vito B, also a Retina 1, then what at the time I considered to be a very inovative model, a Voigtlander Vitessa, with Light Meter, after that came the best little half frame camera ever an Olympus Pen FT, and I aquired also the earlier Pen F, then a Yashica motorised half frame ( just for fun) and a ricoh half frame, a Minolta 8mm, a Minolta Zoom 110, and another Voigtlander 110, an automatic Olympus 35 RC, and a Minolta Automatic, three Rollei's, 35T, 35B, and an LCD version, and a Pentax MX with a number of lens which I still occaisionally use...then on to Digital, the first being the litttle 300,000MPix Panasonic Palm Cam, which at the time was quit.e a hit, since when I have had another 5 Digitals......I have finally given up on the relentless chase for even better cameras and results, I am of the opinion that unless you are making a living by this means,  there is no need for more than 5/6,000,000 pixels,   from that you can get very good results, the best thing that has happened recently in my opinion is Optical Image Stabilisation, which has to be seen to be believed.

My actual very 1st camera was a Brownie that I had off my Uncle.....took a huge roll of film I seem to remember that got you about 12 shots....then when Kodak Instamatics came out they seemed like the bee's knee's

My how things have changed

My 1st SLR was a Zenith that had the light meter ABOVE the lens......seemed pretty bad then.....so sure does look even worse now.

Hooray for modern Technology eh...where will it all end.

My first camera, back in the last century way back in 1976 was a Ricoh KR 10. A bacic 35mm SLR. I use to take my young son to air shows in various parts of the country

A kodak 110 from 1976 I think it came with a spare film and 6 flash bulbs. I still have the photos in an album somewhere.

I think my first camera was one of those Polaroid instant things that were all the rage at the time - you got a funny looking cartridge that spat out a photo from the front of the camera and you had to wait for it to develop! oh the good (?) old days

Joy, my first camera sounded ( and looked) just like yours!

Was yours grey in colour and do you remember having to put the undeveloped photo in a metal sort of sandwich contraption, to keep the warmth in, to help it develop properly?

Oh, such memories come flooding back......

Adrian, not sure about having to put the photo in anything, but do remember waiting with bated breath for the photo to develop, hoping it would be a good one! Also that the photos smelled funny and after a while they discoloured. I recall waving the pictures around trying to dry them

Speaking of taking photo's with the old Ricoh of aeroplanes at air shows. Brings back memories of seeing the Red Arrows for the first time.WOW!!! Breathtaking or what? Speaking of red. I fancy the ferd camera. Any chance?

My introduction to photography was using an old box camera, I'm sure woody will remember them well, big and black with a tiny viewfinder in one corner.

I found a camera like this in an old house that we where rewiring, I was an apprentice at the time, so I bought a film to try it out, then of course it was neccesary to make a print. That was the start.

I then went to Germany on national service and managed to obtain a leica for a few packets of fags, unfortunately this finished up under the tracks of a centurian tank when on manouvers, so I finished up buying a praktica which lasted until Canon brought out the fabulous A1 in 1975

Have been a Canon user ever since. Have processed all my B&W colour prints and slides until 2001 when I sold all my camera gear and darkroom equipment and went totally digital with the Minolta D7, then switching back to Canon when the introduced the 300D

Think mine was a kodak brownie.I seem to remember it had a little home made case with a nice long strap so I could carry it. Then a Zenith ?..Or is that a car ? Something like that anyway..
