Hiya, I am not overly knowledgable about digital cameras
and I was wondering if anybody can recommend a compact digital camera around £100 - Sorry- tight budget!

I currently have a Canon Powershot S50. I quite like its spec, features and ease of use, but its heavy (136g) and bulky and wanted to replace it with something similar, or better, that is a lot smaller and lightweight.

Here's what I am hoping for...

  • Small
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to use
  • At least 5MP
  • Good zoom
  • Good all rounder
  • Auto and manual controls
  • Video and sound
  • Li-lion rechargable battey & charger
  • Supports SD memory cards up to 4GB

I am by no means a professional photographer, but I'd like the camera to
take quality pictures that would make you think that I was!

Thanks in advance of any help

Have a look at the Nikon Coolpix range, I have a 5200 which meets your spec (except for the manual controls). They are going on eBay for around the £50 mark.

Thanks for responding I'll take a look.

Just a couple of Q's if I may?
Is that £50 used price?
Also will I be able to take pics that have the subject matter
focussed, while the background is blurred?
Sorry about the un-tech speak.
s there a technical term for that kind of picture/facility?

Yes that is used I got mine for £34 including a second battery.  You don't have control over the aperture so you cannot guarantee that the background will be out of focus BUT there is a portrait mode that does this automatically and there is also a macro mode which does this for subjects very close to the lens. I have a Canon 20D DSLR and the Nikon is purely a handbag (my wife's not mine) / car camera when I don't want to take the full sized one with me. It turns out excellent results for such a small camera. I hope this helps.

Jill,

The portrait scene mode setting will do the blurring  thing upto a fashion. It is however a fact that small compacts ie. small sensors have a large Depth of Field (sharpness). It is very difficult to narrow that DoF on a compact even if you would have full manual control.

Thanks for the tips

BTW, I have had a look at  both of your albums (Simon and Colins)
and they are cracking photos!

Maybe one day I'll be that good?

Nip down Asda and buy last year's Fuji. They want something like £89. Can't remember the model number but I don't remembering seeing a really bad Fuji last year

But manual controls for less than £100 - you'll be struggling to find one of those unless like Colin says you try second hand.

BTW, small, good, cheap - pick any 2
