Epson's 'economy' A3+ printer turns in a club class performance...

I purchased this product on the day this review was issued, so I came home with the printer and then read the review.

I can't pretend to have used the printer for long, but I am certainly very pleased with its results. Edge-to-edge printing on 8 1/2 x 11 premium glossy photo paper, 100% coverage, highest quality, lowest speed, takes about 2 minutes 5 seconds--I was lucky if I could get a less satisfying print from the printer it replaced (EPSON Stylus Photo 785EPX) in a half an hour.

The silence of this printer is deafening. It does use ink, but not at a particularly alarming rate for an inkjet printer. The 24" width of this printer is a little disconcerting, and it is reassuringly heavy, but my printer table is 27" wide and very strong, so all I had to do was clean it off.

So far I would agree 100% with the findings in this review.

Only problem with this printer are the ink carts - they're small and do drain quickly, plus at very different rates, so it can be tricky to know which carts to buy in anticipation of replacing.

If you keep well ontop of your printing and take good care however, then you can keep an eye on what's approaching depletion.  Official carts aren't cheap though, it must be said.

Mike - you know Epsons have an "ink remaining" utility, right? I mean it even works on Macs now Mine flash a light so you know to open the app which shows ink levels in each cartridge and a message saying "you have enough ink to print xx pages like the last one". Which is kind of nice.

Well yeah, I did used to have 10 of these on the go when I was teaching.

The "ink remaining" wasn't necessarily accurate, and the carts are too small and run down quickly.

Good prints though.

I'm not sure who is doing the pricefixing on ink cartridges, but they have never been a bargain, and I doubt they ever will be--certainly I have always used and expect to use only the Epson brand recommended cartridges, as they produce the results I want. I keep one full set of color cartridges (and two of black) on hand for replacements, which should always give me enough time to obtain fresh cartridges before running out again--I'm not exactly running at commercial speeds here at home. There may be some advantage to me in only having to replace individual cartridges, as with the previous printer, if ANY color ink ran out, the entire three-color cartridge had to be replaced.

But I doubt many consumers are pleased with the volume of ink consumption in any inkjet printer. At least in Epson printers the ink goes where you want it to go. I agree with Mr. Lowe that the "ink remaining" indications are not especially accurate, but better a ballpark figure than a sudden surprise. I think of it as a sort of "fair warning" to expect to have to go shopping for more ink.
